As 2020 — a year worth deleting from our collective memory — comes to a close, so does another decade. And now, with the birth of a new decade on Jan. 1, 2021, it’s as good a time as any to review what the headhunters and HR people predict will be the new workforce profile:
According to the World Economic Forum, professionals will have to be constantly learning new things. That means companies should create a learning environment as well. Randstad says that in the new decade, the “structures of each organization should be built to generate a learning environment.”
On the other hand, Catalyst suggests companies redevelop their workforces and offer employees exciting new skills and responsibilities. The time to go back to learning is around the corner.
Diversity is key
When it comes to future hiring, says Catalyst, it’ll all be about DEI: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This pandemic has proven that we can work not only from different locations, but also different time zones. This means companies will be more flexible about where and when you work. Likewise, Gartner predicts that by 2028, employees will use language software, conversational interfaces and real-time dialect translation to work and speak with team members across languages, borders and cultures. Clearly, a more diverse work space is taking shape.
By 2022, according to Stepsfortalent, machines will be doing more data and information processing than us. This means that humans must learn new skills in order to work with and around robots and machines. STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) has become crucial, prompting young professionals to take courses in analytical thinking, creativity and technological design.
Also by 2022, says the World Economic Forum, robots will have eliminated 75 million jobs globally. But 133 million new jobs will be needed to work with new technologies. Gartner indicates that by 2028, companies will begin boosting the functions of smart machines, requiring employees to learn new software apps and avatars, and to develop extreme digital dexterity.
Interestingly,, 48% of office work will continue to be done remotely even after the pandemic is over. Companies have come to understand that working from home has advantages, not only for their workers but for companies themselves. Gartner predicts that by 2028, the complexity and scale of business objectives will demand brain power and expertise across the workforce, meaning that even into the distant future, we will keep working together.
